The map of Trump’s victory looked eerily similar to her documentation of deaths of despair, according to Shannon Monnat, associate professor of sociology and Lerner Chair of Public Health Promotion, from New England through the Rust Belt to the rural coast of Washington.

The Monday Mile is a part of the Lerner Center's Healthy Monday Campaign, an initiative aimed at offering weekly prompts and programs to support people and participating organizations in starting and sustaining healthy behaviors.

"We hear it a lot: Can we just have conversations and be on a first-name basis with officers?" says Rebecca Bostwick, managing director of the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion. "And [cops] have been good about it at the Near Westside block parties—just shoot some hoops with the kids. It's a work in progress. I'm optimistic about what the field house can do to move that forward."

The Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion collaborated with Pet Partners of Central New York, a local chapter of a national organization that offers animal-assisted therapy and activities with the help of people-animal volunteer teams, for National Public Health Week.

“We’re enormously proud of all that the Lerner Center has accomplished in its first five years,” said David M. Van Slyke, dean of the Maxwell School, about the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion's fifth year anniversary. 

Despite recent challenges, Skiddy Park is thriving with positive activities this summer.

We know how difficult it is to make healthier choices amidst confusing messages. The NuVal system is a simple way for folks to navigate the grocery store,” said Paul Nojaim, owner and president of Nojaim Bros, who is working in collaboration with the Lerner Center.

Walktober 2015 was sponsored in partnership with Healthy Monday Syracuse, the Syracuse University Wellness Initiative and SU Department of Recreation Services. Participants from Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate, SUNY ESF and the VA Hospital walked their way to better health, covering 63,953 miles in 31 days.

Dr. Cynthia B. Morrow, professor of practice in Maxwell’s Department of Public Administration and International Affairs, has been appointed as the Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion. As Lerner Chair, Morrow will teach public health at the graduate level. She will also be involved in community projects sponsored by the Lerner Center.

 The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth), in strategic partnership with the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion at The Maxwell School, has selected six communities across New York State for grant awards totaling $2 million to help them become healthier, more active places where residents of all ages can thrive.
