Maxwell faculty, students honored at One University Awards event

Syracuse University held the inaugural One University Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 25, in Hendricks Chapel, honoring dozens of members of the University community for their scholarship, teaching, academic achievement, leadership and service. The following Maxwell faculty member and students were among the honorees:

Eric Heighberger ’93 BA (IR) appointed chief of staff at FEMA

Prior to his current role with FEMA, from 2013-2017, Heighberger was deputy staff director for the House Homeland Security Committee. He has also held other roles at FEMA; during the George W. Bush Administration he served as deputy director for legislative affairs, and later as advisor to former administrator David Paulison and deputy administrator Harvey Johnson.

Meredith Professor Jackie Orr, teaching awardees honored

Jackie Orr, associate professor of sociology, was named Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor of Teaching Excellence. The professorship was created to recognize and reward outstanding teaching at the University.

2017 Moynihan junior faculty award to be given to Hrodmažić, McCormick

This year's Daniel Patrick Moynihan Award for Teaching and Research, recognizing outstanding non-tenured faculty members at the Maxwell School, will be given to Azra Hrodmažić and Gladys McCormick, assistant professors of anthropology and history, respectively.

Gerard and Castro conduct conflict management workshops in Belize

Catherine Gerard and Peter Castro traveled to Belmopan, Belize to conduct three workshops with University of Belize faculty and staff. At the conclusion of the Environmental Governance and Conflict Management Workshop, participants were awarded certificates from the University of Belize Environmental Research Institute.

Memorial service to be held for Professor Emeritus William Mangin

A memorial service will be held for William “Bill” Mangin, emeritus professor of anthropology in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and College of Arts and Sciences, on Monday, April 17, from 4-6 p.m. in the Founders Room in Maxwell Hall. Mangin earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale University and did his initial field work in Peru, where he was the field director of the Vicos experimental station. He was later appointed to be the deputy director and acting director of the Peace Corps for Peru during the administration of President John F. Kennedy.

Boroujerdi named a 2017-18 American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow

“I thank the University leadership for nominating me, and I look forward to learning new skills during my fellowship year,” says Mehrzad Boroujerdi, professor and chair of political science at the Maxwell School, who has been named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow for the 2017-18 academic year.
