Maxwell School News and Commentary

Students in the program complete coursework to earn an executive master of public administration degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and a master of business administration degree with a concentration in business analytics from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.

The scholarship, funded by the Obama Foundation, provides $25,000 a year for two years toward education expenses, $10,000 for research/service travel between junior and senior year (Summer Voyage), $20,000 in travel funding for the next 10 years, and leadership training.

Jamie Winders, professor of geography and the environment and founding director of the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute, was among the presenters offering perspectives on advanced air mobility technologies at a White House summit in Washington, D.C., last week.

The discussion covered the history of governing abortions in the U.S.; how the Dobbs v. Jackson decision might affect access to abortion and other reproductive services; impacts the decision could have on economic and health outcomes and voting behaviors in upcoming elections; and what precedent this decision might set for other Supreme Court decisions going forward. 

Lamis Abdelaaty’s research explores how discrimination toward vulnerable people fleeing conflict can have a damaging impact.  

Christopher Beardsley, an M.P.A./M.A. (IR) student, has been named a 2022 Boren Fellow. Boren Awards fund students to study critical languages through immersive experiences abroad. Applicants must articulate a commitment to public service and national security.

Catherine Herrold, associate professor of public administration and international affairs, is heading to Serbia for seven months in the Spring 2023 semester. She will live and work in local communities there, interact extensively with local residents and collaborate with scholars at the University of Belgrade.

Seven Maxwell students and alumni have been named as 2022 recipients of awards through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The program funds a range of awards that include English teaching assistantships (ETA) and study/research grants in over 140 countries.

Syracuse University’s Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee has chosen the 35 students who will be the 2022-23 Remembrance Scholars.

Howard “Howie” Phanstiel ’70 B.A. (PSc)/’71 M.P.A. and Gloria Somolekae ’94 Ph.D. (PA), will be awarded honorary degrees during Commencement exercises for their distinguished accomplishments in their professional careers and in service to others.
