At this year's NATO Summit, which took place in The Haque this past week, focus shifted away from Ukraine and President Zelensky, with former President Trump dominating attention and reiterating his skepticism of NATO and support for reduced U.S. military involvement.
The summit ended without concrete progress on Ukraine’s membership or peace talks, though Trump suggested the U.S. might send additional air defense systems.
“Ukraine? What’s Ukraine?” Michael Williams, former adviser to NATO and associate professor of public administration and international affairs, tells the New York Times. “The Europeans were saying how committed they are to Ukraine, especially the British, which is no surprise. But there was also really an attempt to keep controversial issues off the table. Ukraine wasn’t the front and center discussion it has been.”
Williams tells Newsweek that tensions at the first alliance meeting of this Trump administration were high. But the alliance's Secretary General Mark Rutte worked hard to get all the allies to commit to five percent on defense spending and went out of his way to mollify Trump, Williams says.
“The question is whether the Europeans are using this summit to buy time for their own capability development, or if they truly believe the U.S. is still a committed ally,” he adds.
