Israeli airstrikes launched on June 13 targeted Iranian military and nuclear facilities, killing several high-ranking military officers and nuclear scientists. In response, Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel, with some breaching the country’s advanced air defense systems.
Israel sees Iran's nuclear program as a dire threat to its existence and has defended its military actions as necessary to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. While U.S. intelligence agencies believe Iran is not currently building a bomb, President Trump and Israeli officials have warned that Tehran retains the capability to rapidly produce one, posing an urgent threat.
“I would say probably the biggest risk is the duration and the scope of the conflict and the potential that it has for expanding beyond the current parameters in terms of the exchange between the Israelis and the Iranians. And there's a lot of concern across not just the region but I think across the globe for something that could extend beyond the current exchange for air attacks back and forth that the two countries are having, ” Vice Adm. Robert Murrett (Ret.), professor of practice of public administration and international affairs, tells CBS News.
Murrett also discusses the weekend attack by the U.S. on three Iranian nuclear sites on the Dave Allen podcast on 570 WSYR.
“It was certainly a big operation and from an operational tactical standpoint a very successful one in terms of what the did. We don't know yet how extensive the the damage was to Iran's nuclear program. We'll find out here in the days ahead,” Murrett says.
“I wouldn't want to say we're at war with Iran but the bigger thing is Israel is at war with Iran and right through this morning we've seen, on day 11 of the conflict, that conflict is continuing and the duration and scope of that is something which is still up in the air,” he says.
