President Trump’s effort to shrink the federal government has involved assigning Cabinet officials multiple roles, with some managing agencies targeted for deep cuts. While Trump claims this streamlines a bloated system, critics argue it reflects poor management and undermines efficiency.
“It is always a bad idea to burden someone with multiple jobs, especially when at least one of those jobs is extremely important,” says Devashish Mitra, professor of economics and Gerald B. and Daphna Cramer Professor of Global Affairs.
