India has been approving an enormous amount of building projects in the disputed territory of Kashmir in recent years. Since revoking laws that granted Kashmir autonomy, Narendra Modi's government has had new powers to build on and populate the land.

Some Kashmiris claim that Modi’s government is trying to tighten its grip on the region by bringing more Hindus into India’s only Muslim-majority region. India says this is all part of a plan to improve the lives of Kashmiri people.

“I see them [India's projects] as symbols of Indian prescence or public proclamation of their capacity to now settle Kashmiri land, to occupy it when they can,” says Mona Bhan, Ford-Maxwell Professor of South Asian Studies.
